What has authenticity got to do with your interiors?

What's Trending?
I'm not against trends in the design world. I love them; however, they change rapidly. If and when I decide to buy trendy, It has to be of quality and purpose. My personal experience with purchasing on-trend items is, over time, it's not cheap & becomes wasteful. The saying "They don't make them like they used to" is true.
A quick tip: Buy what you like and not what is trendy; that way, it will always be on trend.
These days you may have to go in search of good quality pieces of furniture. I'm talking about the robust items that mature with age. The ones you would find at the antique store, the ones your Grandma owned and her mum before, the ones you can re-sand and paint until your living room needs a colour upgrade, pieces your granddad made in his trade. The heirloom is my favourite piece of furniture.
An heirloom doesn't have to be furniture; It could be a blanket handed down over time, a keepsake or something you found on your travels. All you need are things that happily resonate with you and your journey in life to make a house your home. It should be a space for you.
Some people seek out trades to make bespoke items to create quality spaces that are functional for their needs, and some do it themselves (D.I.Y). Trends tend to go around in circles, so keep in mind that if it happens to be on-trend, will you still be in love in years to come; can it blend with your existing forever-loved items and can it stand the test of time?

Your Authentic Home
Your home is more than a physical space; it reflects your personality, values, and experiences. It serves as a canvas for your individuality and creativity, fostering comfort, safety, and belonging. To cultivate an authentic home, focus on decor that tells your story. Include sentimental items like family heirlooms, travel souvenirs, or artworks from loved ones to spark conversations about your journey. The layout is also crucial. Design spaces that encourage connection, such as open-concept areas for gatherings or cozy nooks for contemplation.
Ensure the arrangement supports your lifestyle, making it easy to host, engage in hobbies, or relax. Incorporate natural elements like plants, light, and organic materials to enhance tranquility. Choose wall colors and furnishings that inspire happiness and reflect your taste. Engage with your community to enrich your home's authenticity. Support local artisans and participate in events that connect you to the area. Ultimately, an authentic home evolves with you, reflecting your journey and values. By nurturing this space with intention and love, you create a genuine home that radiates warmth and authenticity.
Impulse Buying
Just because it looks nice and is of quality doesn't mean you should always buy it. Buy with purpose, and take a thoughtful and holistic approach. If it's good quality and you love it, does it have a purpose in your home; Do you have an intention for it; does it work where you intend? Does it obstruct, impede, or restrict other areas of your home?
Impulse buying can lead to clutter, waste and disappointment. Having 3 of the same items that have no use and don't fit anywhere just because you had the urge and wanted them now is a waste of your precious time and money. Have you ever bought a piece of clothing that doesn't fit; because you didn't have the time or mental space to try it on?
It's the same with your interiors. It is frustrating when you buy that piece of furniture bucked up against your bed; the doors can't open. This means you can never fully appreciate the storage solution you intended to have because you don't have full access to open the door. Measure your spaces; It will save you time, money and frustration.
A quick tip: Being authentic to your needs is heartwarming for you and your interiors.
Not all that Glitters is Gold
Being Truthful about what you need and can afford is part of being sustainable. Whether we are talking about the layout of your home or the furniture you need. Having a space to support you now and in years to come is more important than having the latest trend. You're not missing out on anything. Allow yourself to be thoughtful when designing your interiors.
Every home needs a refresh. However, until then, we want to be able to enjoy our spaces. So, how can we be more thoughtful and holistic in our Design decisions?. And can we be more thoughtful and authentic in other areas of our lives?
